About Alyssa

Alyssa has a broad corporate commercial litigation practice with an emphasis on construction and oil and gas arbitrations and litigation, as well as securities regulation, securities litigation, and class actions.

Alyssa has experience in construction disputes over the course of representing project owners as well as engineers and architects named in multi-party commercial disputes in matters involving contractor delay, deficient work, failure to properly maintain facilities, and construction product liability issues.

Prior to joining Blakes, Alyssa practised at an international law firm with an emphasis on professional liability and director and officer disputes.

Alyssa has appeared in the Alberta provincial court, the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and was second chair in a Supreme Court of Canada matter. She has also participated in regulatory interviews and hearings with the Alberta Securities Commission, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada.

Alyssa has extensive experience working with oil and gas, construction, and accounting experts as well as managing large-scale e-discovery for complex commercial matters.

  • Acted for Pembina Pipeline Corporation before the Securities Commission to defend its break fee and challenge the use of a total return swap by Brookfield Infrastructure Corporation Exchange Limited in the context of a hostile bid made by Brookfield for Inter Pipeline Ltd. and a white knight bid by Pembina

  • Acted in a large matter involving product liability issues related to oil sands construction

  • Acted in a construction arbitration related to claims of cost overruns and delays in construction of a large facility

  • Acted in a construction arbitration involving improper mothballing of a facility

  • Defended a TSX-listed oil and gas company and a number of current and former directors and officers of the company against multiple shareholder class actions in Canada

  • Represented dealers and advisers in regulatory interviews relating to allegations of failure to properly follow Know Your Client obligations, insider trading and tipping

  • Acted for a structural engineer and coordinating professional named in a dispute involving alleged building deficiencies

  • Defended a homebuilder and contractor in a claim for damages as a result of the 2013 flood

  • Acted for an operator involved in a dispute with its joint-venture partner over unpaid invoices, cost overruns and failure to follow appropriate Petroleum Accountants Society of Canada accounting procedures

  • Acted for an engineer that was named in a dispute involving a pipeline failure

  • Defended an insurance broker who was alleged to have made a misrepresentation in an insurance application and breached his duty of care
