About Jake

Jake's practice covers all areas of restructuring and insolvency law. He has particular experience with the enforcement of the rights of unsecured creditors in Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) proceedings and the litigation aspects of secured debt enforcement, receivership proceedings and CCAA proceedings.

Jake joined Blakes as a Summer Student and subsequently articled with the Firm. While at law school, Jake worked at the Dalhousie Legal Aid Clinic, served as a research assistant and volunteered on several school societies and pro bono projects. Jake was the recipient of awards for the top student in property, tax, and insurance law courses.

Some of the cases on the public record in which Jake has been involved include acting for:

  • The court-appointed monitor in the CCAA proceedings of JTI-Macdonald Corp., involving over C$600-billion of claims asserted against it and the Canadian tobacco industry

  • The secured creditor NYDIG ABL LLC in the Iris Energy (IE CA 3 Holdings and IE CA 4 Holdings) British Columbia receivership proceedings (cryptocurrency)

  • The secured creditor PNC Bank in enforcement proceedings against a private aircraft (aerospace)

  • Multiple unsecured creditors in the CCAA proceedings of the Nordstrom Canada entities (retail)

  • Multiple unsecured creditors in the CCAA proceedings of Mastermind GP Inc. (retail)

  • The receiver and trustee in bankruptcy in the Mahal Venture Capital & Golden Miles Food insolvency proceedings (food and beverage)

  • The receiver in the Southmount et. al and Victoria et. al receivership proceedings (commercial real estate)
