About Heather

Heather's litigation practice involves all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation with an emphasis on regulatory law, environmental law, professional liability, and contract disputes. She has represented clients before the Alberta Court of King's Bench, has authored written submissions for several levels of court and administrative bodies, and has participated in various alternative dispute resolution processes, including judicial dispute resolutions.

Prior to joining Blakes, Heather clerked for the Honourable Madam Justice Rowbotham of the Alberta Court of Appeal.

  • Acting on behalf of an Alberta tech company in response to an injunction application by a regulatory body

  • Representing a large media outlet in response to a defamation claim

  • Representing professionals in disciplinary proceedings by their regulatory bodies

  • Acting on behalf of a large natural gas company in a C$35-million dispute involving seismic data

  • Acting on behalf of a First Nation in regards to a royalty dispute with the Government of Canada

  • Representing a transmission line operator in an appeal involving Constitutional and land valuation issues

  • Assisting international clients with letters rogatory

  • Acting on behalf of a large general contractor in respect of various liens and lawsuits by several sub-contractors

  • Acting on behalf of a commercial property owner in relation to quasi-criminal charges resulting from a hazardous substance release

  • Representing directors in Provincial Court in relation to a claim involving personal liability in tort

  • Advising domestic and international clients on regulatory and environmental issues relating to natural resource development (i.e., coal, liquefied natural gas) and renewable energy development (i.e., wind)

  • Advising a client on First Nations' claims to traditional marine territory

  • Conducting environmental due diligence reviews for securities financings involving petroleum & natural gas companies

  • Advising an international client on Alberta's interconnected electric system

  • Acting for several insurers in settlement negotiations relating to personal injury matters

Professional Activities

Heather is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Calgary Bar Association.

Heather has volunteered as amicus at the Alberta Court of King's Bench and as civil duty counsel at the Provincial Court of Alberta. She has also been a member of the executive of the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta (South) Environmental Law Section.
