About Joseph

Joseph is a member of the Competition, Antitrust & Foreign Investment group. His practice focuses on all aspects of competition law and advocacy, including contested merger litigation, class actions, merger review, marketing and distribution matters, investigations, abuse of dominance, joint ventures and strategic alliances, and regulatory compliance. He also advises on foreign investment merger review under the Investment Canada Act.

Representative matters in which Joseph has been involved include:

  • Royal Bank of Canada on its C$13.5-billion acquisition of HSBC Bank of Canada

  • Filo Corp. on its C$4.5-billion acquisition by BHP and Lundin Mining Corporation

  • J.M. Smucker on its US$305-million divestiture of its Voortman brand to Second Nature Brands, a CapVest Partners portfolio company

  • Primaris REIT on its acquisition of the Halifax Shopping Centre and the Annex in Halifax, Nova Scotia for aggregate consideration of C$370-million, comprised of cash, Primaris REIT units and exchangeable preferred units of a subsidiary limited partnership of Primaris REIT
