About Tony

Tony is a leading expert in Canadian environmental law who assists with identifying and managing environmental risks, providing advice on day-to-day operational issues, and solving complex issues. His work specifically includes advising on environmental regulation and management, corporate compliance and due diligence, and litigation matters.

Tony's experience includes work in the energy, mining, natural resources and forestry sectors as well as manufacturing, real estate, municipal, waste management and transportation.

  • Advised major energy companies on environmental assessment and permitting for a major natural gas project and pipeline transmission

  • Advised on environmental assessment and permitting of LNG development projects, and provided Indigenous consultation

  • Advised an independent power producer on environmental permitting and compliance for a major renewable energy project (development and construction phases)

  • Advised provincial government on environmental assessment and permitting for major infrastructure development projects (bridges, roads)

  • Advised a range of corporations on environmental due diligence for property and business acquisitions, including industrial and manufacturing operations and marine terminals

  • Advised a major energy utility and land owner on greenhouse gas emission compliance, reporting and carbon credits

  • Advised major industrial operations on internal and external environmental compliance audits

  • Advised developers, land owners and purchasers on managing environmental risks for brownfield development and contaminated sites; and negotiated terms for the acquisition and financing

  • Provided environmental emergency advice to mining and energy companies

  • Advised and managed environmental enforcement actions by regulators for mining, energy and transportation companies

  • Represented clients in prosecuting and defending claims for clean-up costs associated with contaminated sites

Professional Activities

Tony is an executive member and a past chair of the National Environment, Energy and Resources Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association and its B.C. Environmental Law Section. He is also a member of the Brownfields Committee of the British Columbia Environment Industry Association.

Tony frequently writes for various publications on environmental matters. Some of his most notable works include Canadian Environmental Law (LexisNexis) (B.C. and Yukon chapters), The Law of Climate Change in Canada (B.C. chapter) and the environmental chapter of Business Laws of Canada. He is also a contributor to the BC Contaminated Sites Handbook, Halsbury's Laws of Canada and the Environmental Law Journal. He is a contributing editor of the Canadian Environmental Law Journal.
