About Peter

Peter has broad experience in many areas of business law, including executive internal counsel and business related positions with an international energy firm and an international financial services firm. Peter's practice focuses on domestic and international commercial transactions, primarily in, but not limited to, the energy (oil, gas, power and renewables) and agribusiness sectors, with an emphasis on mergers, acquisitions and dispositions; joint ventures; project development; structured commodity off-take and supply transactions; and energy and other commodity marketing transactions. Peter's experience includes significant transactions and projects in Alberta, as well as in other Canadian, US and international jurisdictions.

Peter is a member of the Blakes Executive Committee.

  • Suncor Energy on its acquisition of TotalEnergies EP Canada Ltd.

  • Suncor Energy Inc. on its collaboration agreements with Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited in connection with a rebranding of Canadian Tire retail fuel stations to Petro-Canada, including a long-term fuel supply arrangement and joint loyalty program

  • Suncor Energy Inc. on its acquisition of Teck Resources Limited's working interest in the Fort Hills oil sands project

  • Agrium Inc. on its merger of equals transaction with Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., creating Nutrien Ltd.

  • Agrium Inc. in connection with its supported funding of Glencore International plc's acquisition of Viterra Inc. and the subsequent acquisition by Agrium from Glencore of Viterra's wholesale and retail agri-products division

  • ENMAX Corporation on its agreement with Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure PLC for the sale of its Calgary District Energy Centre

  • ENMAX Corporation on its acquisition of Emera Maine's transmission and distribution business from Emera Inc.

  • ENMAX Corporation on commercial matters relating to the development of its Shepard Energy Centre, an 800 MW natural-gas-fired, combined-cycle, electricity generation facility in Calgary, Alberta, and the subsequent sale of a 50% interest in the Shepard Energy Centre to Capital Power, creating a joint venture for the Shepard Energy Centre between ENMAX and Capital Power for the construction completion, operations, real time dispatch management, and structured long-term electricity off-take arrangements

  • ENMAX Corporation on its joint venture with Capital Power for the 1,050 MW natural-gas-fired, combined-cycle, Genesee 4 and Genesee 5 Energy Centres, being developed near Warburg, Alberta, for project development, construction, real time dispatch management, site leasing, shared facility services, and structured long term electricity off-take arrangements

  • ENMAX Corporation on its purchase from Encana Corporation of the 115 MW natural gas fired, Cavalier electricity generation facility located near Strathmore, Alberta, and of Encana's 50% interest in the 110 MW natural-gas-fired, Balzac electricity generation facility located near Balzac, Alberta

  • Suncor Energy Inc. on its acquisition of TransAlta Corporation's Poplar Creek, Alberta cogeneration, transmission and distribution facilities and assumption of operating control, and ultimately ownership, of two gas turbine generators and two heat recovery steam generators at Poplar Creek, representing 376 MW, in exchange for its 20 MW Kent Breeze, Ontario wind power facility and its 51% interest in the 88 MW Wintering Hills, Alberta wind power facility

  • A consortium of Canadian private equity investors on their bid to acquire AltaLink, as owner and operator of the majority of Alberta's electricity transmission system, from SNC-Lavalin

  • BluEarth Renewables Inc. on long-term, structured electricity off-take arrangements with a consortium of Alberta School districts in support of the financing and development of its 30 MW Bull Creek wind-power generation facility in Provost, Alberta
